Defense officials plan to launch a task force in July to assess the business case for consolidating the military’s three exchange services and the Defense Commissary Agency, and develop integration plans for a new organization. By reducing overhead and operating expenses, a single organization offers the greatest potential for sustaining defense resale activities, according to a DOD spokesman. A memorandum establishing the task force is in draft form, reports Army Times. One concern of military family advocates is whether any portion of the profits from military exchanges now dedicated to morale, welfare and recreation programs would be diverted to support commissary operations.
