Anticipating an upcoming BRAC round, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) has organized a statewide meeting with leaders from communities and the private sector to discuss the possibility of base closures in New York.
The meeting, which may also include the Governor’s office, aims to develop a plan to protect the Empire state’s defense installations and position them so that they survive potential closures in the near future.
According to the Senator’s office, a new BRAC process may begin as soon as 2013, with a commission deciding base closures in 2015. Sen. Gillibrand is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
New York has seen several bases close in previous BRAC rounds, including Seneca Army Depot, Griffiss Air Force Base and Plattsburgh Air Force Base. Today, New York is home to several large installations including, Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn and Fort Drum near Watertown.
