Shanahan: DOD Must Ensure Space Force Costs Stay in Check

March 20, 2019

A Space Force could need 15,000 to 20,000 personnel, Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said Wednesday at a CSIS event. The administration’s budget requested funding for 15,000.
Shanahan said the costs could go up.
“In the department, we’re really going to do a bottoms-up approach to cost,” Shanahan said, according to Military.com. “Cost grows if you don’t limit it. To me, it’s like, we need to cap it.”
The fiscal year 2020 budget asks for $72.4 million to establish the new branch within the Air Force and asks for $2 billion total over five years.
