SOTU Look Ahead: Troop Shifts, Infrastructure

February 4, 2019

Troop drawdowns and infrastructure investments are among the topics President Trump is expected to discuss in Tuesday evening’s State of the Union address.
Trump has hinted in recent days he wants to bring troops home from Middle East deployments, saying ISIS has been defeated, though many of his closest Capitol Hill allies are pushing back. Trump wants to keep some troops in Iraq “to watch” Iran, he said Sunday on CBS.
At the same time, he is likely to discuss planned deployments to the southern border and is considering a military option to help ease tensions in Venezuela.
He is expected to also mention his long-delayed plan for infrastructure investment across the country, seen as an opportunity to work with Democrats.
Trump will call on Congress to “break decades of political stalemate, bridge old division, heal old wounds, build new coalitions, forge new solutions, and unlock the extraordinary promise of America’s future,” according to an excerpt released Friday.
