Balfour Beatty Communities LLC will construct 564 townhomes at Fort Bliss, Texas, and renovate 220 homes at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., as part of an expansion effort at its family housing projects at the two sites.
The work, which is expected to be completed in 2014, comes in response to a significant increase in military strength at both installations.
The new townhomes at Bliss will be designated for junior enlisted and junior noncommissioned officer ranks and their families. The new units will consist of two-story, four-plex arrangements and one-story duplex, handicapped-accessible units. Additional amenities for service members and their families will include two neighborhood centers with swimming pools and several playgrounds.
Renovations at White Sands will include whole-house electrical upgrades and new HVAC systems, as well as new lighted playgrounds in two neighborhoods. To provide additional open space in the community, a total of 126 homes will be demolished and re-graded for future development.
The new development will incorporate sustainable features, including high-efficiency HVAC equipment, Energy-Star compliant lighting fixtures and appliances, water efficient fixtures and drought tolerant, native landscape materials, the Newton Square, Pa.-based Balfour Beatty said in a written statement.
