The California Energy Commission last week approved a $5 million grant to demonstrate a renewable energy microgrid at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division, where it will power a server farm building. The Electric Power Research Institute won the grant and will provide $3.5 million in matching funds. The project is designed to develop a replicable model that demonstrates how to avoid electric instabilities during transitions between grid-connected and islanding modes, reported Microgrid Knowledge. It also could help the industry curtail the amount of customization needed in microgrid development.
