Central Pennsylvania Base is Vital Part of Region’s Economy

With almost 4,500 personnel, Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg, located outside of Harrisburg, Pa., is responsible for an estimated $800 million annual economic impact across six counties.

Amid talk about the possibility of another BRAC round, the Central Penn Business Journal takes a detailed look at how the base fuels the region’s economy, including the retail businesses supported by the base’s payroll, and the suppliers and contractors that rely on it for a substantial share of their work.

“[More than] 4,300 people buying $100 of groceries just once a week is a lot of money,” the former president of the local chamber of commerce told the paper.

The support activity employed 8,000 workers in 1983, but the first four rounds of BRAC trimmed the workforce, changes made possible by a smaller Navy fleet and increased productivity.
