City Supports Most Recommendations from JLUS for NAS Lemoore

The Lemoore City Council last week accepted 17 of the 21 recommendations in the joint land use study (JLUS) for Naval Air Station Lemoore in central California.

The study’s policy committee — made up of officials from Lemoore, Kings County and Fresno County — approved the final study in August and asked each jurisdiction to pass a resolution supporting its recommendations, reported the Hanford Sentinel.

One recommendation opposed by the city council calls for Lemoore to work with the Navy and the two counties to take advantage of the Readiness and Environmental Protection Initiative, which allows DOD to partner with conservation organizations and state and local governments to preserve buffer land and habitat around installations and ranges.

Earlier this year, Navy officials asked the city to partner with the base to purchase easements limiting incompatible development, but the city rejected the offer due to budgetary concerns, according to the story.
