County Wants to Consider Airport Reuse at Willow Grove

Despite opposition from many of the municipalities and residents neighboring Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Willow Grove outside of Philadelphia, Montgomery County commissioners voted last week to apply to the base’s LRA for a public benefit conveyance for the airfield.

The commissioners insisted that they have no intention of operating an airport but, instead, want to ensure the county does not lose out on potential economic development in the future that an airport could support. One option for the county would be to mothball the airfield’s 8,000-foot-long runway and adjacent land until it is needed to relieve Philadelphia International Airport, reported PhillyBurbs.com.

In recent weeks, the Horsham Township Council and Montgomery Township have expressed their opposition to using the 892-acre air station for commercial air travel.
