Is an Airport Really on the Table at Willow Grove?

Two Montgomery County, Pa., commissioners last week raised the possibility that the reuse of Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Willow Grove, outside of Philadelphia, could include an airport.

Neither lawmaker voiced a particular position on the airport question, but both referred to the base runway as a key asset that could support economic development down the road, reported PhillyBurbs.com. Opinion polls of residents have consistently opposed turning the air station into a civilian airport.

An editorial this week in the newspaper warns local officials to consider the long-term needs of the region before deciding to get rid of the base’s runway.
