Mesa Moves Ahead to Carry Out Reuse Plan for Air Force Research Lab

The city of Mesa, Ariz., has awarded a contract to Dover, N.H.-based RKG Associates to help it acquire and redevelop the former Air Force Research Lab, an eight-acre facility closed as a result of BRAC 2005.

Mesa is planning to acquire the property through an economic development conveyance; the city intends to maintain and enhance high-level research activities there in collaboration with Arizona State University and contractors. The facility, which consists of nine buildings, served as a major secure research and development center for the Air Force.

The lab is located adjacent to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport and the university, and represents the last vestige of Air Force property at the former Williams Air Force Base, which closed in 1993. Jeffrey Donohoe Associates and Weston Solutions will work with RKG over the next several months to evaluate the property’s condition, and prepare market and financial plans for the reuse effort.
