Parties Try Mediation in Suit over Cleanup of Schilling AFB

Attorneys for the federal government and the city of Salina, Kan., and other local agencies will meet next month for their first mediation session in an attempt to settle a protracted dispute over the cleanup of TCE at the former Schilling Air Force Base.

The city, along with the Salina Airport Authority, the Salina school district and Kansas State University-Salina filed a lawsuit last year in U.S. district court to force the federal government to pay for the cleanup of contaminated soil and groundwater at the site, reported the Belleville News-Democrat.

The cost of the cleanup has not been determined and would be part of any settlement, according to the story. Salina acquired the base after it closed in 1965.
