The annual economic impact of Scott Air Force Base on the surrounding region is $3 billion, a 43 percent jump from 10 years ago.
The base, located just over the Illinois border from St. Louis, is the largest employer in southern Illinois and the third largest employer in the St. Louis metro area, reported the Belleville News-Democrat.
In addition to looking at the payroll the base generates, the study examined the impact on housing, school districts, contractors and businesses providing services for the base. “Fourteen school districts receive or qualify for about $14 million annual for military dependents. Twenty-five thousand homes, or about 10 percent of the housing market on the Illinois side, are impacted by Scott Air Force Base personnel,” said Scott Schanuel of Woolpert, the company that conducted the assessment.
