Super Hornet Squadrons Designated for Cherry Point Headed West Instead

Officials in coastal North Carolina expressed disappointment at the news that two squadrons of Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets slated to move to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point will instead be based at Naval Air Station Lemoore, Calif.

The 12-aircraft squadrons would have generated an estimated $30 million annual economic impact, reported the New Bern Sun Journal. “We’re disappointed they won’t be coming and that the money won’t be coming to our county. It means that locally we’ll have to work together to see what our next steps are,” Jim Davis, Craven County economic development director, told the paper.

The squadrons, now based at Naval Air Station Oceana, Va., are being shifted west as part of a Navy plan to base 60 percent of its assets in the Pacific Fleet and 40 percent in the Atlantic Fleet.
