The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Health System, in partnership with Joining Forces, has launched an initiative for providers to identify whether their patients are veterans.
The Have you ever served in the military? campaign is intended to improve health care by helping providers obtain a military health history which will allow clinicians to consider unique exposures and concerns of veterans.
“By recognizing our servicemen and women, we can improve their quality of life and overall health outcomes,” said Cheri Plasters, a UAB Hospital nurse in transplant and surgical services who is spearheading the program.
“A military health history is at the core of planning the care of veterans,” she said.
Only 20 percent of veterans are treated at VA medical centers, meaning many are treated at clinics, hospitals and other organizations, Plasters said. The UAB Health System’s ultimate goal is for providers at all organizations and hospitals to obtain a military health history to help plan care.
