Virginia Beach Purchases Property to Protect Oceana

The city of Virginia Beach, Va., paid $6 million last week to purchase an 18-acre commercial property to protect Naval Air Station Oceana from incompatible development.

The property, which includes hair and nail salons, and lawyer’s offices, is in the base’s accident potential zone 1 (APZ-1). The purchase is part of a commitment the city and state made following the last BRAC round to spend $15 million a year to roll back incompatible development surrounding Oceana, reported the Virginian-Pilot.

The city plans to redevelop the site for new uses compatible with the city’s APZ-1 ordinance and Navy easements.
