The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes and USAA this week launched an initiative to boost the career prospects of military spouses by leveraging business, civic and military stakeholders to create employer networks geared to hiring spouses. Military Spouse Economic Empowerment Zones will be established in eight communities this year, starting with San Antonio, reported Texas Public Radio.
“We’ve identified specific locations across the country that have a commitment to supporting our military families, and identified communities where we are able to leverage our Military Spouse Professional Networks,” said Elizabeth O’Brien, the Chamber foundation’s head of military spouse programs. “Most importantly, we are creating a one-stop-shop for the military spouse. Education opportunities, volunteer opportunities, job opportunities — we’re taking all of these resources that already exist and convening them in one location.”
The initial communities where the program is being introduced were selected because they already have the key components in place, including community and local employer interest in military spouse employment and support from the local installation, reported Military.com.
