Child Care App Wins Air Force Innovation Award

February 12, 2020

An app intended to streamline and centralize the subletting process of short-term spots at military child care centers won first-place at the 2020 Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center (AFIMSC) Innovation Rodeo in San Antonio recently, according to an Air Force press release.

The concept of the app, called Kinderspot, was invented by Maj. Jacque Vasta, executive officer for Air Force Materiel Command’s deputy commander at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. Vasta was inspired by her own family’s experience using the military’s Child Development Centers (CDC) and difficulty finding a sublease for her child’s spot at the local CDC.

Vasta will receive a share of $1 million from AFIMSC to develop the idea. “There are a lot of other people out there with this problem too, so I knew it was an enterprise problem I could solve,” she said.

Other winners at the event included a project to develop technology for augmented reality for utility and communications Infrastructure, as well as an idea for autonomous mowers for airfield mowing operations.
