County Bolsters Support for Readiness Center at Youngstown ARS0

Trumbull County last week approved shifting a small piece of the county’s lodging tax to the Western Reserve Port Authority in an effort to support the creation of a regional joint readiness center at Youngstown Air Reserve Station in northeastern Ohio. After gaining an additional 0.5 percent of the lodging tax, the port authority will receive 3.5 percent of revenues and the Trumbull County Convention and Visitors Bureau will receive 1.5 percent, reported WFMJ. The county’s contribution now matches the allocation provided by Mahoning County. The $1.3 million readiness center would serve as a staging point for first responder agencies during civil emergencies or disasters, as well a regional hub from which troops from all branches of the military in Ohio and three neighboring states could deploy. Local officials believe the readiness center would improve the air station’s standing in a future BRAC round. “We want to keep our base strong,” said Trumbull County Commissioner Dan Polivka.

Two steps that could better position Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in a future BRAC round include conducting a study of the installation’s airspace and building a highway overpass to improve access between two sections of the base, according to a report prepared for the state of New Jersey. The 168-page report from D.C.-based Cassidy & Associates was part of the government relations firm’s contract with the state to provide recommendations to preserve and enhance its military installations. The airspace study would aim to demonstrate the joint base had a sufficient amount of unencroached airspace to accommodate the KC-46A, the Air Force’s next-generation refueling tanker …
